The Google Workspace Question

Most legal professionals already use Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. This context shapes which AI tool makes more sense as a daily driver. Gemini is built into Google Docs, Gmail, and Google Drive. If you draft documents in Google Docs, summarize emails in Gmail, and store files in Drive, Gemini's native integration reduces friction significantly.

ChatGPT sits outside most existing tools. You open it in a browser, do your work, and bring results back to wherever you need them. The workflow requires an extra step. That step adds up over hundreds of daily interactions.

Context Window: Gemini's Headline Advantage

Gemini 1.5 Pro offers a 1 million token context window — far larger than ChatGPT's 128,000 tokens. In theory, this allows Gemini to process an entire case file, a multi-year contract history, or hundreds of documents in a single session. In practice, very large context windows sometimes produce less accurate results on questions buried deep in the document set.

For legal professionals routinely working with massive document collections, Gemini's context window is relevant. For most daily tasks — drafting a motion, summarizing a deposition, reviewing a contract — the practical difference between 128K and 1M tokens is not meaningful.

NotebookLM: Gemini's Hidden Legal Tool

Google NotebookLM is a separate product built on Gemini that allows you to upload documents and conduct research-style conversations grounded in those specific documents. For legal professionals, this is useful for depositions, case files, and deal documents — you upload the relevant materials and ask questions about them without the AI drawing on outside training data.

ChatGPT has no direct equivalent to NotebookLM. Custom GPTs can be loaded with documents, but the experience is less cleanly designed for document-grounded research. NotebookLM is free and worth trying for any legal professional who handles large document sets regularly.

Drafting Quality and Legal Writing

Both ChatGPT and Gemini produce high-quality legal drafting. Neither has been trained specifically on legal content, which means both will occasionally produce text that sounds plausible but does not reflect actual legal standards. Attorney review of drafted content is always required.

ChatGPT's drafting tends to be slightly more structured and verbose. Gemini's output is often more concise. Which you prefer depends on your writing style and the task at hand. Try both on a few typical drafting tasks before committing to one as your daily tool.
